Here on the Costa Blanca, Semana Santa is one of the most important times of the year, combining religion, tradition, music, art and centuries of local history.

For several days, streets across the region fill with processions, traditional costumes, music and enormous religious sculptures carried through the historic centres of the towns.

It is a very different side of the Costa Blanca — and one worth experiencing.

Semana Santa in the Region

Easter is celebrated across the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida, but some towns are particularly well known for their Semana Santa traditions.

Orihuela is one of the closest and most remarkable examples. Its Semana Santa has been declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional and is deeply connected with the city’s history, churches and religious brotherhoods.

Cartagena is another exceptional place to experience Easter. Its Semana Santa is also officially recognised at international level and lasts for ten days, from Viernes de Dolores to Easter Sunday. The processions are a major part of the city’s identity and bring thousands of people into the historic centre.

Torrevieja, much closer to Orihuela Costa, also has a long Semana Santa tradition, with processions taking place through the city during Holy Week.

Each town has its own traditions and character, but the atmosphere is unmistakably Spanish.

A Tradition That Fills the Streets

One of the most striking things about Semana Santa is the scale of the processions.

Large religious sculptures are carried through the streets, accompanied by members of the different brotherhoods, musicians and crowds of spectators.

Some processions are solemn and quiet, while others are accompanied by bands and thousands of people lining the streets.

In Cartagena, for example, the city’s historic centre becomes the setting for ten days of processions, with several brotherhoods taking part throughout the week.

You don’t have to be religious to appreciate the atmosphere.

The craftsmanship of the sculptures, the music, the traditional clothing and the atmosphere of the old streets make Semana Santa a fascinating cultural experience.
