There are many ways to welcome summer, but few are quite like San Juan.

Every June, communities across Spain celebrate the Noche de San Juan, a night traditionally associated with fire, the sea and the arrival of summer. On the Costa Blanca, beaches become the centre of the celebrations, with people gathering with friends and family long into the night.

And you don’t have to travel far from Orihuela Costa to experience it.

San Juan in La Zenia

One of the local places to experience San Juan is La Zenia Beach.

Cala Bosque has hosted San Juan celebrations where people gather by the Mediterranean, enjoy music and spend the evening on the beach. In 2026, traditional bonfires were officially permitted on La Zenia Beach for the first time in several years, with specially provided wood used for the fires.

The atmosphere is very different from an ordinary summer evening.

As the sun goes down, the beach starts to fill with people, music continues and the first fires begin to light up the night.

A Night of Fire and the Sea

Fire is at the heart of San Juan.

The traditional Hogueras de San Juan are bonfires built as part of the celebration, bringing people together around the flames. In La Zenia, the beach provides the perfect setting — the Mediterranean on one side and the glow of the fires on the other.

There can also be live music, food, drinks and other entertainment, depending on the year’s programme. Across Orihuela Costa, San Juan has also been part of a wider programme of summer celebrations, with events taking place throughout June.

For visitors, it is a chance to experience something that feels very different from a normal night out.

San Juan is not only about the bonfire itself.

San Juan is celebrated around 23–24 June, with the main celebrations taking place on the night of 23 June.

The exact programme and arrangements in La Zenia can change from year to year. Bonfires on the beach are also subject to local rules, so it is always worth checking the latest information before heading down.
